CALL FOR WASHINGTON STATE ARTISTS
The City of Port
Townsend Washington seeks an individual artist or team of
artists to create an art project within its refurbished downtown
waterfront area. This revitalized waterfront area, scheduled for
completion in 2010, stretches from the new Northwest Maritime
Center at Point Hudson to Quincy Street. It will celebrate the
intersection of the city’s historic and commercial cityscape
with accessible seascape and includes a waterfront esplanade,
visitor plaza, and tourism infrastructure improvements. Artistic
enhancement of this space could take the form of a specific art
project or it could also augment existing features or planned
new additions or features. We invite a broad interpretation of
creativity.
How to Apply
Please refer to
this page for more detailed information,
maps,
visuals, and
answers to possible questions.
Eligibility
Any resident of
Washington State may apply
Budget
The preliminary
budget for artwork is $70,000 which has been allocated under the
City's Percent for the Arts program. This program requires that
one percent of the budget for eligible City-funded construction
projects be spent on artwork for City facilities. The budget
includes amounts for design, materials, fabrication and
installation costs. If the art project is enhancing a feature
that is already part of the overall project the art budget will
be the incremental cost to enhance that feature.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can the public art be located?
The public artwork must be located within the
project area on
public land, within a right-of-way, or outside of a public
building or facility as shown on the
site map. Due
to cost and permitting issues, the artwork cannot be located in
the intertidal area (the area between high and low tide) or in
the water. However, the artwork may be located on an existing
public overwater structure (i.e. City Dock).

How will the artist be selected? A
selection panel has been formed. The panel consists of members
of the Arts Commission, community members, local artists, a
member of the City’s Historic Preservation Committee and City
staff. The panel will review submittals and forward a
recommendation to the Arts Commission. The Arts Commission will
make their recommendation to the City Council for final
approval.
