Public Works "Water Once Used" FAQs

Waste Once Used (Wastewater)

Does the Waste Water Treatment Facility discharge into the Chinese Garden Lagoon?

No, we discharge the treated wastewater into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, approximately 915 feet off shore.

How many gallons does the Waste Water Treatment Facility treat?

We treat an average of 950,000 gallons per day. Peak flows during very wet weather can double or triple the amount coming into our facility. This is due to the storm water that is routed to the sanitary sewer by road drainage, illegal roof drains, etc.

Are composting toilets allowed in the City?

Composting toilets are not allowed in the City at this time. Currently there are no City standards for composting toilets.

What do I do if I have a failing septic system?

Contact the Jefferson County Health Department and call Francesca Franklin 379-5093 at the City Permit Center for a permit to connect to the City sewer.
